Hydrology Program

SPRING 2001: SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS
Held in EES Conference Room, MSEC 202

DATE SPEAKER
January 16 at 4pm Miecael Pasyanos - Geophysics and Global Security Division, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory: Surface waves are an effective tool in studying shallow earth structure, particularly in aseismic regions where body phases do not propagate regionally. Surface wave methods are applied to the Middle East, North Africa, and western Former Soviet Union, large portions of which are aseismic. We then use the surface wave results to estimate the crust and upper mantle structure in the region. We also use the measurements to improve estimates of surface wave magnitude (Ms). Ms is used in conjuction with the body wave magnitude (mb) to form one of the most reliable discriminants between earthquakes and explosions.
January 24 at noon Nelia Dunbar and Bill McIntosh - Best of Erebus Eruptions: On Erebus this season, we installed a video camera on the crater rim. This camera captured a number of great eruptions. Everyone is welcome to view this short video.
