Policy for Appointment of Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science

Adjunct faculty appointments will be made to individuals who contribute to the educational mission of the Department of Earth and Environmental Science. Their contributions can include but are not limited to the following activities:

  1. Undergraduate or graduate instruction
  2. Research supervision of graduate students
  3. Serving on department and student research committees
  4. Public service which enhances the reputation and stature of the department.

Adjunct status may be requested by the interested individual or by any regular or adjunct member of the department. Such requests should be made to the department chair and should be accompanied by a statement of potential contributions to the department’s educational effort and a resume or other evidence of the applicant’s training and experience. Appointment of adjunct status will be at the discretion of the department.

Adjunct faculty will carry no rank or title other than Adjunct Faculty member of the Department of Earth and Environmental Science.

The appointment of an individual to adjunct status in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science should be considered an honor and one which carries a number of responsibilities and privileges. Adjunct status allows an individual to attend department faculty meetings, submit research proposals through the department, and participate in the operation of the department.

Adjunct faculty may also serve as the research advisor for graduate research projects if approved by the appropriate discipline within the department. In all cases students will be assigned an academic advisor from among regular department faculty

All adjunct appointments will be subject to annual review by the department chair.
