For New Mexico Tech students the
six week course now consists of each of the following:
ERTH 483, Field Methods in Earth Science
I, 2 cr Prerequisites: ERTH 203, 380,
385. Offered Summers
(first 2 weeks)
Collection, processing and interpretation of geological data from stratified
rocks, collected by geologic mapping and other means. Presentation of
geologic reports involving stratigraphic sections, maps, cross sections, and
other data. (Johnson)
ERTH 484, Field Methods in Earth Science
II, 2 cr Prerequisites: ERTH 483 Offered summers (second 2 weeks)
Collection, processing and interpretation
of geological data from landforms and unconsolidated regolith, collected by
geologic mapping and other means. Presentation of geologic reports involving
maps, cross sections, and other data. Students should register for this
course in the spring semester. (Harrison)
ERTH 485, Field Methods in Earth Science
III, 2 cr Prerequisites: ERTH
483. Offered summers (third 2 weeks)
Collection, processing and interpretation
of geological data from igneous, metamorphic and/or structurally complex
rocks. Presentation of geologic reports involving maps, cross sections, and
other data. Students should register for this course in the spring
semester. (Axen)
These three courses are offered consecutively
each summer commencing in late-May and continuing through early-July without
interruption. While we anticipate that these courses will be taken
consecutively by most students, they may be spread out over more than one summer
as long as the prerequisites for each portion are met.
All registrations must be for the Spring 2012
semester. Your field camp lab fees need not be paid until
May 18, 2012 - just before field camp begins. If you are a New Mexico Tech student on financial aid or if you expect financial aid for
field camp, be sure that you visit
in the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible.
Saturday 19 May through Sunday
1, July 2012. Students should assemble in Socorro by 8:00 am on Saturday
19, May preparing to
travel to the field on 20 May. The group will return to New Mexico Tech via
Albuquerque on 1 July.

Logistics and Equipment
Topographic maps, geologic compasses, and air photos will be provided. Students must
supply their personal gear, sleeping bag, tent, geologic pick, hand lens, notebooks, etc.
Approximately five weeks will be spent in dormitories, and one-week camping. Lab fees (except
for approximately 6 travel days when food costs will be borne by the participants) cover food
costs associated with the field camp.
