New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT) invites applications for a tenure-track position in geochemistry at the Assistant Professor level. We seek to fill the position from one, or a combination, of the following research areas: igneous petrochemistry (especially volcanic rocks), sedimentary geochemistry, geochemistry of ore deposits, and radiogenic isotope geochemistry. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Earth Science or a related field at the time of appointment. Potential for excellence in teaching and research are the most important qualifications. Responsibilities will include developing an active program of extramurally funded research, supervising and supporting graduate students, teaching four graduate or undergraduate courses per year and service to the Department, Institute and at the national/international level. Teaching responsibilities will include general geochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrology, introductory geology, and specialty courses at the upper-division and graduate level.

NMT, located in the central Rio Grande community of Socorro, specializes in science and engineering education and research and has a present enrollment of approximately 2000 undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will join a strong department consisting of 18 faculty and about 50 undergraduate and 60 graduate students. Additional geoscience professionals on campus include over 30 staff members of the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, plus faculty and researchers in the Petroleum Recovery Research Center, Petroleum and Mineral Engineering departments, and the IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center. NMT also currently operates the Mount Erebus Volcano Observatory. Analytical facilities on campus include the state-of-the-art New Mexico Geochronology Research Laboratory (40Ar/39Ar), a stable-isotope laboratory, electron microprobe, XRD, ICP-MS systems for trace-element analysis (including a laser-ablation ICP-MS), quadrapole gas mass spectrometer, fission-track and cosmogenic isotope facilities, and a soil chemistry lab.
