Seismometer Specialist

The IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center at New Mexico Tech is seeking applicants to fill the position of Seismometer Specialist. The position will be filled either at an introductory level or a senior level depending on applicant’s qualifications. Responsibilities include repair and testing of broadband and intermediate seismometers, and maintenance of high-frequency geophones. User support and fieldwork are an essential part of the position.

We are seeking self-motivated individuals able to work in a multitasking environment, and comfortable interacting with the seismological community both to provide support and to help users determine the appropriate equipment to meet their scientific goals. Successful candidates are: willing to travel for up to one month to support seismic experiments in remote, international field locations; able to work well in stressful situations; and are able to work both independently and as part of a team.


Data Specialist

The IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center at New Mexico Tech solicits applications for a professional Staff Scientist/Data Specialist for seismology support operations. The PASSCAL Instrument Center supports both controlled and passive source seismology worldwide with end-to-end experiment support services, state-of-the-art portable seismic instrumentation, and advanced field and database management tools.

Core Responsibilities Include:
Data quality control, archiving, and user liaison
User support and training
Monitoring, archiving, and analyzing facility test data
Seismological fieldwork and user support

Minimum Requirements:
M.S. or higher degree in geophysics or related science, or 3 years of directly applicable experience
Familiarity with time-series analysis
Working knowledge of UNIX/Linux
Demonstrated knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. bash, tcsh, Python)

Desired Qualifications:
Applicants with database experience, familiarity with seismic data formats (e.g. SEED, SEG-Y, SAC) and a background that includes seismological or geophysical field experience are desired.

Seismometer Analyst

The IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center at New Mexico Tech is seeking applicants to fill a full-time position of Staff Scientist / Seismometer Analyst. This is a fixed term position with the possibility of extension if funds become available.

Core responsibilities include: quality assurance testing of broadband, intermediate, and short period seismometers; developing test procedures and archiving of test data in support of seismometer testing; and maintaining real-time data capture of seismic pier data.

Required qualifications: Master's degree required Seismology or related field or 5 years direct applicable experience. Seismology, time-series analysis, scripting languages and UNIX required. Matlab and seismological field experience desired.

Field Operations Scheduler

The IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center at New Mexico Tech is seeking applicants to fill a part-time position of Field Operations Scheduler.

Core responsibilities include: international shipping/small packages; maintain shipping log details/electronic files and freight forwarder invoicing; submit international and domestic shipping invoices to IRIS with project rebill details; export compliance support; maintain shipping records/documents to assure files are “audit ready” for compliance check; communicate with warehouse personnel regarding incoming and outgoing international shipments; aid in assuring palletized equipment is ready for export according to international shipping rules/regulations; and “Custom Detail” web page support.

Additional responsibilities will occasionally include maintaining department records and documentation, staff support, reception, and assist with and process employee and student-employee time cards/requests for leave.

Required qualifications: Associate's degree required in Basic Science, accounting, office management OR three years or more directly related work experience. Working knowledge of MS Word and Excel required. Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation required. Strong arithmetic skills required. Working knowledge of international shipping procedures desired. Working knowledge of import/export regulations desired.
