K-12 Teacher Resources

Welcome to the Earth & Environmental Science Department! We want to help you teach your students more about earth science. Please look over the resources below, and if you have any questions, please contact Bruce Harrison, Associate Professor of Geology and Undergraduate Recruitment Coordinator.

Middle and high school teacher opportunity to work in Antarctica at the Mount Erebus Volcano Observatory. Application deadline 15 June 2008.

Free Rock Identification Kits for your Classroom

Roll over with cursor to open box. These kits are produced by the Earth Science Club at New Mexico Tech, and include an 18-page manual with detailed descriptions. The size of the kit is approximately 14 inches wide, so the rocks and minerals inside are large enough for your students to study. To see the inside of the kit, move your cursor over the picture.

If you would like one of these rock kits for your class, please email Bruce Harrison (bruce@nmt.edu) and include your name, school name, mailing address, and email address.

Funding and distribution of these kits has been made possible by Ricardo Maestas of NMT University Relations.

Consulting Scientist Program for New Mexico Teachers

New Mexico Tech scientists in Earth and Environmental Science are available to come to your classroom and talk to your students about the cutting-edge research they are doing. They are available at NO COST. Browse through the list below, select talks that interest you, and contact the professor directly. Please limit your requests to two visits per year. We suggest that you make the most of the visits by inviting other classes.

Bring Your Class to New Mexico Tech

You can bring your class to the New Mexico Tech campus so your students can get a taste of the college experience. One of the departments you can request to visit is the Earth & Environmental Science Department. While there, your students will attend demonstrations on geology, geochemistry, geophysics, and hydrology in laboratory classrooms. During these demonstrations, your students will be able to interact with undergraduate and graduate students on a one-to-one basis. (See pictures and video below.)
