My current interests are centred around structural problems in New Mexico.
In the Manzano Mtns, NE of Socorro, we ( Laurel Goodwin, Paul Bauer, Matt Hiezler, Joe Marcoline and I) are using detailed structural mapping, microstructural studies, Ar/Ar thermochronology, and U/Pb geochronology to place constraints on the nature and timing of deformation and metamorphism.
In the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mtns (east of Santa Fe) Paul Bauer and I, as part of the Statemap project are mapping both the distribution of the Proterozoic rocks and the nature of the Proterozoic deformation. This is an area which was also deformed during the Laramide Orogeny and during Rio Grande rifting. We are also mapping the distribution and kinematics of brittle faults associated with this deformation.
I have an ongoing interest in the use of GIS in geology. Presently we do not have a GIS system, but hope to amend this sometime in the future. I am currently using Minicad on the Mac to produce my maps. As Minicad has both a macro language and database built in, it can be used, in a limited sense, as a GIS. Such CAD programs can id in geological mapping and interpretation.
