The department owns a Nikon
Super Coolscan 4000 slide scanner that is available for use by faculty,
staff, and students. It is available for checkout. Please see the Staff Engineer.

Scanner Nikkor ED high-resolution lens, using Nikons extra-low dispersion
glass for sharp, clear images
Dynamic range of 4.2 provides detail throughout a wide range of tones

Adapter to scan unmounted negative film
Directions on how to use the scanner. (NOTE: These instructions were written when the slide scanner was connected to a Mac):
Check that the "Nikon Super Coolscan 4000" is on.
Insert a mounted slide into the scanner or use the "Nikon strip film holder
FH-3" to mount your negatives and insert the device into the scanner.
Open up Adobe Photoshop using one of the following methods,
located on the desktop
located in Mac HD --> Applications --> Adobe Photoshop 6.0 --> Adobe Photoshop

Inside Photoshop go to File --> Import --> Nikon Scan 3 ...
The Nikon scan window will load. If it gives you an error message, turn
the scanner off, then on again. If you still get an error message, make
sure the scanner is on and restart the computer.
Preview your image by pressing "Preview" in the left menu.
Make adjustments to the image by using the right menu. If you are scanning
negatives be sure to indicate this in the left menu. You can also crop
the image at this time.
Press "scan" in the left menu to scan your image.
The image will be opened in Photoshop.
Save your image to a zip disk or folder that you can access later by going
to File --> Save As...
When you are finished please quit Adobe Photoshop.
