MSEC 202 - EES Video Conferencing Center

This room comfortably seats 14 people around a long table and can accomodate 20-30 additional people in chairs around the room. (Arrange for additional chairs ahead of time!)

The room has a regular white board at one end, a digital SmartBoard at the other, a dedicated Dell PC computer with wireless keyboard and mouse, and a Mitsubishi digital projector suspended from the ceiling. The digital projection system was donated by the SAHRA project. The room also has a coffee maker and a sink.

Please see the office staff in MSEC 208 to reserve this room.

SmartBoard

This amazing and fun gadget allows a presenter to draw on the board and to control the computer using the board as a giant touch screen. The SmartBoard software is already running when the computer is turned on, so all you have to do is start drawing with one of the pens or touch the board. There are four "ink" colors: brown, red, blue, and green. Pick up only one pen or the eraser at a time as the board can only recognize one item at a time. When using web-conferencing software, what you draw on the SmartBoard will be seen on all the other computers in the meeting! For more features, see the instruction manual in the tray to the left of the computer. FAQs. Tips. Smart Technologies website.

The SmartBoard in action

Computer

There is a Dell PC in this room dedicated to running presentations and the SmartBoard. It is already connected to the projector on the ceiling, so you don't have to worry about hooking anything up. The PC is usually left running, so don't press the power button unless you verify that it is off. The PC's operating system is Windows XP Pro. Popular presentation programs, such as MS Word and PowerPoint, are installed on this computer. Microsoft's free web-conferencing software, NetMeeting 3.01, is installed and available via a shortcut on the desktop. The PC has a wireless keyboard and mouse, an Ethernet connection, a CD, a Zip drive, two USB ports, a sound board with an input for a microphone, and stereo speakers. NOTE: It doesn't have a Firewire connection or a video capture board for live camera input, but if there is enough interest, this could be provided in the future.

Mitsubishi Digital Projector

Suspended from the ceiling is a Mitsubishi Model X490U digital projector. It is turned on/off with either the blue button on the remote control or with the power switch on it's south side. An instruction manual is in the tray to the left of the computer. NOTE: If you ever see "Lamp" flashing on the screen after it is powered on, see the office staff in MSEC 208 for a replacement bulb as it is close to burning out. Instruction manual (703MB PDF). FAQs from Mitsubishi's website.
