How to Buy a Computer
by Susan Delap

Take the time to do a little research before buying a computer. It's not all about just CPU speed, memory, and hard disk size. Websites like CNET.com have buying guides that are well written and not too hard to understand. I recommend reading their desktop buying guide or notebook buying guide before buying your next computer. PC Magazine's website also has some good buying guides and reviews.

The CNET website also has fairly current reviews and pricing on software and hardware. Even if you don't know anything about printers, digital cameras, etc., reading one of their buying guides will help you make a somewhat more informed decision. Feel free to ask me any questions if you're stumped.

Dell and Gateway are on the NM State Contract, so you should get a better deal from them. If money is tight, check out Dell's refurbished computers in the Dell Outlet. I've had good experiences buying refurbished computers (desktops and notebooks) from them.
