I was laid off by Bank of America in 2002 and after taking some time to look at the job market and my own desires, decided that I did not want to return to the world of finance or information technology. I applied to one of the local school districts to be a substitute teacher and see if I liked teaching. Two days after I applied I got a call from one of the local high schools asking if I would like to teach Chemistry and Physical Science. I said yes, and am now teaching full-time and going to school to get certified as a secondary school science teacher. I've really enjoyed it - in spite of some of the students!. I should have my full license within the next year, at which point my wife and I are considering a move back to the west. Anyone looking for a couple of teachers for science and primary grades ESL?

Here's a bit of trivia...I named the newsletter TechTonics in 1982 or 1983. Then-grad student Steve Rosen took an interest in a departmental newsletter. He ran a contest to name it, with a 6-pack of the beer of the winner's choice as prize (I chose Molson's Golden Ale). It's nice to see that the TechTonics name is still in use!

I've been on quite an adventure since graduation. I moved to Kuwait soon after the gulf war to teach Geology, among other topics, to high school students. Three years later I moved to Pakistan to teach and stayed six years. We would still be there if not for the trouble after 9/11. I took a break from the troubled areas of the world and moved to Thailand to teach. It was fun for awhile, but I missed the adventure. Besides, the SARS epidemic was getting too close for comfort. We will be moving back to Kuwait in August to begin a new teaching assignment. My son, Andrew Krosche, will graduate from high school there and our adventures will continue.

I returned to New Zealand after finishing at NM Tech and began a family--two daughters, now teenagers. The marriage didn't last, so I've been single for some 10 years now. As my children have gotten older, I have developed a vertically integrated woolcraft business, from farming through processing and selling handcrafted wool and supplies. Increasingly now, my time is devoted to teaching woolcraft--both traditinal and new innovations. My latest project is tutoring workshops for small groups of tourists as part of the Creative Tourism New Zealand network, so if you're planning a trip to New Zealand, come visit.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to drop a line to everyone to say hello and to share some of the good news in my life. As most of you know, I have been living in Tucson for the last year and a half, and love it. Five months ago, I decided to leave the environmental consulting world to explore other environmental opportunities. Since then, I have been working for a small, women-owned environmental analytical laboratory as Project Manager and Quality Assurance Manager. The great news that I want to share is that within my short employment with the lab, I have just been promoted to Laboratory Director. I oversee the daily operations of the facility, manage analysts, provide quality assurance, client manage, and complete the reporting for the laboratory, and then some....  This is a position that most aquire after "years" of experience. I can only say that hard work has its benefits!
I hope that everyone is doing well. I would love to hear what has been going on in your lives.I know that it has been a while since I have spoken to most of you and I apoligize. So please drop a line.

I operate a computerized logging unit in an offshore environment for Halliburton Sperry-Sun Drilling Services in Lafayette, Louisiana, with a surprising emphasis on being a competent network administrator for Windows NT, as well as operating with the company's in-house software. I also provide clients with accurate and timely data products and daily written reports. Data include lithology, gamma and resistivity, gas composition C1 through C5, H2S, interpreted formation pore pressures, observed drilling parameters, etc. I evaluate all formations penetrated and immediately describe and report any hydrocarbon shows and monitor all aspects of rig operations and downhole conditions. I am also responsible for reporting any suspected unsafe conditions and keeping rig personnel apprised of such conditions.

Things are good. We are getting quite a NMT contingent (Swen Magnuson, Deb McElroy, Annette Schafer, Kristine Baker, Mitch Plummer, Mark Ankeny, Alva Parsons and myself) at the INEEL that have been associated with the hydrology department. When I am not being entertained at work, you can find the Mattson clan hiking in the mountains, drifting down the rivers, or watching our kids' soccer games.

If you don't already know, I have been assigned to Doha, Qatar, for a period of approx. 3 months. I am unsure if I will have to stay longer, or if I will have to relocate to another place. All this will come with time.
So you probably are wondering why I am here. If you know me at all, you know I sometimes get a wild hare and do something stupid, like volunteering or taking a weird job. Well, I volunteered to work for NIMA as a forward deployed GIS person. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on perspective) I have been sent to Qatar.
Qatar is an Arabian Gulf State. See this linky-link! It is rather small, and has lots of sand and wind. It is friendly to the US, and allows the US military to exercise the power of Hard Currency by having a base here. That is where US CENTCOM is located.
That is where I work; far away from Saddam and his 2 dead sons. The base, located in Doha, or rather in a desolate industrial area south of Qatar. The place is a warehouse park and maintenence depot, converted to house people. Imagine living in a big parking lot! It is basically made of concrete and metal and gravel. Most everything is painted tan, and the sun makes it all hot and shiny. The wind sometimes whips up a bit of sand, but it is not too bad.
There is a pool here, extensive gym, movies, TV and DVD in each room, phones, lots of computers, and everything is air conditioned to near arctic levels. Actually the AC is a bit too much--I sometimes get the sniffles. The living spaces are 20-30 foot shipping boxes you would typically see on a truck. They have these things converted into modular 'Lego Block' like pieces that can be stacked next to and on top of each other to make a hotel of sorts. Two people share a room, and each gets their own bed. The Cormexes, as they are called, are situated in the warehouses on base, are stacked 2 high, and compared to tents in the field, are luxurious.  There is plenty of running water and lots of showers. There is a huge chow hall, and the food is decent, but not too healthy. That's where the gym comes in. There is even a small truck-mounted Burger King. There is a small PX with essentials, and some non-essentials like Pringles, a pub (3 beer limit) and some other nick-nack shops. All the ammenities of home....... Burp! Ahem.  "In the rear with the gear"
The base 'help' are called TCNs, or Third Country Nationals. They are non-Qatari guest workers who clean-up, make food, fix trucks, drive busses, whatever nasty job the Qataris would not do. Most oil emirates hire lots of TCNs. They send plenty of money back to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India or the Philippines, where they are from.
The Qataris, lovingly refered to as Haji, or Hajis by the GIs, are practically non-existant on base. They look like your stereotypical Arab types, with the white robe and head-gear. The society is more liberal than other Arab nations, and a range of dress can be found. I will send some pics when I get the chance to take some. I cannot take pictures on base except in the quarters.
Anyhow, the work is interesting, but I cannot divulge what it is. I am sure you can understand.
If you want to send me anything, I would prefer e-mail. I don't think I will need anything, considering my situation here. Just keep me in your thoughts, but more importantly, remember those who are really in the heat in Iraq. It is pretty cushy here. I can't imagine what the forward area is like.
I will try to send letters as time permits, pictures and so forth included!

I've just been converted to a permanent employee at Los Alamos, where I have been a post-doc for the past year.
My parents are doing well and are pleased that I will be staying in New Mexico (so am I)! I'm keeping busy not only with work, but also volunteering at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, and I continue training and competing in freestyle figure (ice) skating.

I'm in Iowa City at the University of Iowa. I'm getting my Master's here in August and will start on a PhD in the fall. I am studying Middle Devonian stromatoporoids of the Solon and Rapid biostromes right around Iowa City and comparing the five genera that I have identified using a morphometric analysis.  For my dissertation, I would like to expand my current research laterally and stratigraphically and eventually make some suggestions about stromatoporoid abundance and diversity throughout the Middle Devonian and tie any changes in these patterns into environmental factors.
