How to Publish Web Pages (or how to transfer files
between your local computer and web server)
by Susan Delap
Where to put the files so they're "on the web"
If you have an EES account (see Staff Engineer to set up), create a subdirectory in your account directory named www or public_html. Place all your HTML files in this directory, and they will be accessible from this URL: www.ees.nmt.edu/~username. Your homepage can be named either "homepage.html" or "index.html" and it will automatically come up when you type in your URL without specifying the actual file name. If no one can access your website, you may have to change the file permissions. For help with that, read John Shipman's instructions on setting up a website on the TCC, as much of it is relevant here.
For TCC accounts, click here for details or here to quickly set up a web directory.
How to transfer files
Use Secure FTP. The ftp server is www.ees.nmt.edu.
Dreamweaver
If you are using Adobe Dreamweaver, it has a wonderful
Site Management feature that will transfer files back and forth from your
local computer and web server, and it even offers to transfer dependent
files and update links if you move files to different directories. Be sure and use "secure FTP". See
me if you have trouble using this feature.
