ESRI Software
by Susan Delap

Currently the Bureau of Geology owns an unlimited client site license for selected ESRI products. They have given us permission to use their license server for our software. For a list of software products included in the license, click here. For more information on ESRI products, please see their website at www.esri.com.

Documentation for ArcGIS 9.0, ArcGIS, and some extensions can be checked out from the Software Manager. Documentation for everything else is online. Click here for instructions. Glen Jones, Bureau of Geology B93B, has additional hard copy documentation. ESRI also has a Virtual Campus where you can access online tutorials.

ESRI software is installed on the PCs in MSEC 239 (see Software Manager for the exact titles), MSEC 187, and the Suns in MSEC 345. If you want to install ESRI software to your own machine, select one of the following based on your OS.

Windows 2000/NT/XP Users
Access to the most current ESRI software requires a connection to a license server. That is, you will only be able to access the software from on campus. If you absolutely require off-campus the TCC offers a service where your computer can be anywhere but still access all campus resources as though you are on campus. Go here for details.

Minimum requirements for access to ESRI software through the license server are:

Matt Richmond has provided the following Instructions for Installation. See the current Software Manager if you need additional assistance.
  1. Get to the \\software\EES-Software\arcgis90 fileshare, either through windows explorer or by typing the address into the "run" box in the start menu.
  2. There are two files which must be run in turn: SetupWorkstation.exe, which sets up the older Arc stuff, and SetupArcGIS.exe, which installs Arcinfo Desktop.
  3. When going through the install wizards, make sure you select "custom installation" and select to have all the extensions installed on the local hard disk. I know this must be done for the workstation install; it may also need to be done for the ArcGIS install. I didn't get to see that part. Extensions are not installed by default, oddly enough.
  4. That's about it; fairly straightforward. The software will tend to strain whatever machine it's put on, so people should really be sure they need it before they install it.
Windows 95/98 Users
You're still stuck using the old ArcView 3.2 software. But the up side is that the license server is not needed. Pick up an installation kit from the Software Manager. There is a one-hour time limit on checkouts. The installation kit takes about 40 minutes to install and includes: ArcView Data and Maps (1999) are also available for checkout.

Unix Users
ArcINFO Workstation 8.1 is now installed on all the Sun machines in MSEC 345 research lab. It can be invoked by typing arc. Contact Software Manager for installation on other UNIX-based machines.

Macintosh Users
ArcView GIS 3.0a is available for installation to Macintosh computers. OS 7.1 minimum? (ESRI no longer has any documentation on its website for the Mac version.) Pick up the installation CD from the Software Manager. ArcView Data and Maps (1999) are also available for checkout.
