Our Changing Atmosphere: Global Warming, Stratospheric Ozone Depletion, and Smog
by Prof. F. Sherwood Rowland
Dept of Chemistry,
University of California--Irvine
DETAILS
Prof. Rowland is a Nobel Laureate in chemistry. His work led to the discovery that chlorofluorocarbons are only removed from the atmosphere by strong ultraviolet rays found in the stratosphere, and that the chlorine released there would destroy ozone. His work led to the banning of CFCs from aerosols by the US, Canada, and Sweden in the late 1970s and a later global ban on all CFC production. Prof. Rowland has advised the current and several former presidents on environmental issues.
Seminar held Thursday, September 29, 2005, 4pm, Workman 101 at New Mexico Tech
A joint Chemistry/Physics/EES seminar
