New Laser Scanning Technology in Geotechnical and Archaeological Environments
by Jim Holmlund - Western Mapping Company, Tucson, AZ

This seminar is a little different: the speaker will present a method for ultra-high precision surface imaging and 3-dimensional mapping, based in new laser scanning technology and imaging software. This system is capable of imaging surfaces to sub-mm precision in an absolute 3-D reference frame, suitable for use in GIS and other digital database environments. The applications to be presented include imaging of archaeological features in the SW (including Gran Quivira) and of mining and geotechnical surfaces (e.g., exposed rock faces, joint and fracture patterns in mines, etc.).

On Friday, March 11, at 10 a.m. in front of the MSEC main entrance, Dr. Holmlund will demonstrate the laser scanner operation. Please attend if interested in learning more about how this new technology works. In case of bad weather, this will be held in the Geophysics teaching lab, MSEC room 351.
