Socorro Hailstorm -- October 5, 2004
story and pictures by Susan Delap

Doppler radar image from NOAA

On Tuesday afternoon between 2 and 2:30 pm, a thunderstorm that came in from the west swept through Socorro slamming the area with hail that grew to 3 inches in diameter. (Details from NOAA) Local TV news reports stated that hail this size strikes the ground at speeds of 100mph.

I photographed this event from the New Mexico Tech campus while standing outside the front entrance of the Mineral Science and Engineering Complex (MSEC) building.
