Geological Map of Mt. Erebus

Despite almost 30 years of scientific research on Mt. Erebus, a large percentage of the volcano has escaped physical examination. The reason for the relative lack of geologic data is the vast quantities of snow and ice that cover Mt. Erebus. Mt. Erebus covers an area of approximately 400 square miles (1035 sq. km). Of that area, less than 15% consists of exposed lava flows. Most of the exposed lava flows are anorthoclase-phyric tephriphonolite and phonolite in composition - the youngest flows on Mt. Erebus.
