New Mexico/Princeton Earth Physics Project

PEPP (the Princeton Earth Physics Project) was established as a way to build a network of seismic recording stations in high schools across the US and to enrich secondary school science education. Principal centralized resources for the program reside at Princeton and at Indiana University. The goal of PEPP is to create fruitful links between research universities, colleges, and secondary education. It seeks to engage students in the acquisition of seismological data, to help teachers bring the reality of science into the classroom, and to motivate and enable scientists to spread knowledge and activities beyond the boundaries of their departments.

What organizations make up NMPEPP?

The New Mexico PEPP (NMPEPP) is a cooperative program of several organizations joining together to bring seismology to the classroom across New Mexico and to encourage interaction among New Mexico's institutes of higher learning and science students and teachers statewide.

What New Mexico schools are participating in NMPEPP?

NMPEPP has twenty participating schools from all around the state. In July, 1996, teachers from these schools came to New Mexico Tech to participate in a successful workshop in which they were introduced to PEPP and were provided with information and resources to begin teaching their students about seismology. The workshop was a lot of fun and we continue to build on the cooperation and excitement which were established.

What is the present status of NMPEPP?

We presently have four sites up and running in the NMPEPP network, and more are planned. As instruments become avaliable we hope to instrument all of the participating schools, and will keep teachers apprised of upgrades to the software. Click on the image at left for details.

I'd like more details about NMPEPP.
