AGU Outstanding Student Papers
August 1, 2003 -- Congratulations to hydrology graduate students David Boutt and
Suzanne Mills and former MIT graduate student Enrique Vivoni!
These New Mexico Tech-associated folks received three of the 15 awards given for
Outstanding Student Paper in Hydrology at the American Geophysical Union
(AGU) 2002 Fall Meeting in San Francisco, California.
The titles of these award-winning papers are:
- David Boutt (PhD Candidate in Hydrology):
An analysis of the role of fluids in fracture initiation and
propogation using direct simulation of the coupled fluid-solid system
- Suzanne Mills (Masters Candidate in Hydrology): Quantifying salinization of the Upper-Middle Rio Grande
using a basin-scale water and chloride mass balance model
- Enrique Vivoni (Assistant Professor of Hydrology): Triangulated irregular networks
and similarity in landscape processes
The awards were announced in the July 15, 2003, issue of EOS.
Sedimentologist Taken Out by Igneous Rock
June 16, 2003 -- Peter Mozley, Associate Professor of Geology, returned to his office this week
after a harrowing run-in with a rock on May 4th. Peter, pictured holding a friendly
sedimentary rock, was riding his bicycle at about 15 mph down the steep road from
Langmuir Lab where he encountered a fiesty igneous rock that caused him to lose
control of his bicycle. Peter remembers seeing a huge wild turkey right before he went sailing over the
handlebars. He landed hard on his hip, fracturing the ball joint, and then waited about
an hour before a friend happened along and found him. And, no, there was not a hungry mountain
lion circling him as was widely believed. Other local myths Peter wants to dispel include a plunge
off a cliff where he had to climb back up to be rescued, and a slip on the sidewalk while walking to his office.
Fellow sedimentologist Dana Ulmer-Scholle and other
well-wishers erected a shrine outside Mozley's office to honor their fallen colleague. Peter especially appreciates
the training wheels donated by Rick Aster's 7-year-old daughter (who no longer needs them.)

Rosen and Mioduchowski Wedded
June 16, 2003 -- Congratulations to Joy Rosen and Andrew Mioduchowski
who were recently married. Joy is currently an MS student in Geology. Andrew graduated in 2001 with
an MS in Geology and is now employed in Wyoming. The happy couple will reside
in Wyoming, once Joy has finished writing her IS this summer at Tech.
