Jayne Receives Gutjahr Fellowship
June 26, 2002 -- The first recipient of the Allan
Gutjahr Memorial Fellowship is Mr. Justin Jayne. Mr. Jayne is a first-year
Hydrology graduate student who received his BS in Physics from NM Tech in 2001.
Justin is working with Dr. John Wilson on
techniques to relate point measurements of hydraulic properties to
large-scale behavior of water in aquifers. Drs. Gutjahr
and Wilson were working together on this problem at the time of Allan's
death; thus, it is
most appropriate that Justin receive this award to continue the work of Dr. Gutjahr.
The Allan Gutjahr Memorial Fellowship will be awarded to a mathematics or
hydrology graduate student who is doing mathematical research involving a
hydrology problem or hydrology research using mathematical methods. An
undergraduate doing the same type of research who plans to enroll in either
the hydrology or mathematics graduate program at New Mexico Tech will also
be considered. (Article courtesy Pat Mills)
Hydrology Prof Named SSSA Fellow
June 25, 2002 -- Jan Hendrickx,
Professor of Hydrology at New Mexico Tech, was recently named a Fellow of the Soil
Science Society of America (SSSA) for 2002. Fellow is the highest honor bestowed
on members of SSSA. Fellows are active Society members who have been nominated because
of their superior achievement in research; education; public service; personal
achievement, recognition, and service; and a minimum of 10 active years of Society
membership. Hendrickx has been a member of SSSA since 1982 and served as Associate Editor for
the Soil Science Society of America Journal for Div. S-1.
Hendrickx's research focuses on preferential flow mechanism in the vadose zone,
the application of non-invasive geophysical methods for soil hydrology, ground water recharge
in arid regions, and the soil physical aspects of landmine detection. For details,
